Chapter 3: Feedback as Formative Assessment

Here is a place to start a conversation about this chapter. What stands out for you? What do you think about rubrics? What works or doesn't work for you? How do your students use rubrics?

Update on 11/7 Study Group

On Saturday we read the article from Educational Leadership, Looking at Student Work, which discusses the productivity of shifting the lens from looking at student work as "proof" that the student "got it" to focusing on improving teaching. This led into a discussion of the dilemma inherent in the use of rubrics and other grading criteria. We talked about assessments and how they are used and how often that the purpose of the assessment is primarily summative.

For our next meeting, we agreed to read Chapter 3 in our book and to bring 5 copies of a single piece of student writing. We agreed to select a piece we have questions about--not our most stellar student!

Feel free to add your perspective of Saturday's conversation--ask questions, suggest resources. Let's continue our conversation between the meetings!
